Advanced Lymphedema Management I

This 3-day advanced course is open to Certified Lymphedema Therapists only. All participants need to show proof of completion of a CDT certification program from one of the recognized schools.

Participants are invited to submit questions related to their daily work with lymphedema patients, as well as case studies of patients prior to the course, for discussion and problem solving during the conference.  Pictures of submitted case studies would be helpful but not required.

Objectives

This course will review the anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system and thoroughly cover evaluation and treatment sequences for lymphedema affecting the upper and lower extremities, as well as the head and neck. The use of alternative compression materials for the trunk and advanced use of compression bandages for the extremities will be discussed.  Further, the incorporation of alternative bandaging/night time garments will be presented.  New areas of development and research in regards to lymphedema treatment will be included. These areas include the Lymphedema Treatment Act, exercise programs, Axillary Web Syndrome, compression pumps, elastic taping.  Case studies will allow the participants to further develop their clinical problems solving skills.

  • Review Vodder technique – stationary circle, pump, rotary, and scoop
  • Review of Trunk Treatment for UE and LE Lymphedema
  • Advanced UE and LE Bandaging and Trunk Compression
  • Review of Genital Bandaging and Difficult Hand Swelling
  • HNL Treatment Sequence
  • Advanced case studies of more difficult cases involving various areas of the body
  • Overview of the Lymphedema Treatment Act; PALS exercise program
  • Overview of Compression Pumps, Elastic Taping and Axillary Web Syndrome
  • MLD with other conditions: fibromyalgia,scleroderma, RIBP
  • Solaris Presentation – Alternative Bandaging/Nighttime compression

This 3-day advanced course is open to Certified Lymphedema Therapists only. All participants need to show proof of completion of a CDT certification program from one of the recognized schools.

Duration

This course is 3 days in length (24 contact hours).  The classroom hours are approximately 8:00am – 5:30pm daily.  There will be approximately one hour for lunch every day.

Continuing Education Credits (CEU's)

This course is 24 Contact Hours.  CEU's are available.  Each state and profession is different, so please contact our Admissions Department for more detailed information regarding CEU approvals.  Academy of Lymphatic Studies is an approved provider for AOTA and NCBTMB.

What to Bring

  • Bring your textbook (if you have it).
  • Two sheets to cover the treatment tables and draping.
  • Pen/Pencil/Highlighters, as these may be useful for highlighting your manual.

All other class materials will be given to you on the first day of class.

What to Wear

Certain techniques that are practiced during classtime require direct contact with the skin.  Please have the following items available for class labs:

  • Ladies: Bathing suits, halter-tops, sports bras, shorts
  • Gentlemen: shorts, or bathing suit.

It is recommended you wear these items under comfortable clothing. The days can be long, so we want you to be as comfortable as possible. You may also want to bring a light jacket with you to class. Classroom temperatures can be difficult to regulate.
