Advanced Lymphedema Management Certification (ALM)

This expert level 6-day certification course provides instruction on advanced topics of Lymphedema Management, including Head and Neck Lymphedema (HNL), Lymphatic correction using elastic taping, advanced bandaging techniques, Axillary Web Syndrome (AWS), difficult patient case studies, compression pumps, postoperative and postradiation intervention techniques, circulatory and integumentary systems, wound assessment, wound care and more. This certification course consists of three 2-day sections: ACOLS Lymphatic Correction Using Elastic Taping and Advanced Bandaging, ACOLS Management of Lymphedema of the Head and Neck and our new ACOLS Fundamentals of Wound Care for Lymphdema.

Alumni students who have already completed the ACOLS Advanced Lymphedema Management course and/or ACOLS Management of Lymphedema of the Head and Neck course can receive credit and only take the sections they have missed to qualify for the new Advanced Lymphedema Management (ALM) designation.

The course will be taught by ACOLS instructors who are licensed physical therapists certified in wound care. The course is open to Certified Lymphedema Therapist (CLT) certified PTs or OTs only. Must be previously CLT certified through either the Academy of Lymphatic Studies, the Norton School, Klose School or LANA.

  • Principles of tape applications: cuts, tension, application and removal
  • Indications and contraindications for the application of elastic tape
  • Application of elastic taping techniques for lymphatic correction of swelling and soft tissue mobility
  • The use of elastic taping in lymphedema management
  • Kinesio Taping
  • Tape application for scar management
  • Tape application for fascia and fibrosis correction
  • Brief review of exercise effects on fluid movement
  • Lower Extremity Bandaging/Alternative Lower Extremity Compression
  • Axillary Web Syndrome
  • Intermittent Pneumatic Compression (Compression Pumps)
  • Review Genital Bandaging
  • Pathology Head & Neck Lymphedema - Causes of HNL, Lymphostatic Encephalopathy, Surgical Procedures and Radiation Therapy.
  • Effects of HNL on Communication, Swallowing and Psychosocial Aspects Lymphostatic Encephalopathy
  • Head & Neck Treatment Sequence
  • Development of a basic Treatment Plan for Patients with HNL.
  • Appropriate Modalities to reduce HNL, to include: Manual Lymph Drainage and Compression for the Head and Neck
  • Review of MLD Techniques and Treatment Sequences for HNL
  • Compression Therapy for HNL

  • Review of Measuring Techniques for Facial Compression Products
  • Phases of Wound Healing
  • Wound classification, types of wounds (partial/full thickness, stages, Wagner grades, CEAP, burns
  • Acute vs. Chronic wound
  • Wound Bed Preparation (microenvironment, inflammation vs. infection, debridement, exudate, management bacterial control)
  • Integumentary Assessment, wound examination, clinical measurements
  • Wound Differentiation (venous, arterial, diabetic/neuropathic, atypical)
  • Treatment Interventions (cleansing/irrigation, debridement, offloading, compression considerations, UNNA boots, multilayer compression, pumps, velcro devices, electrical stimulation, ultrasound, light therapy, negative pressure wound therapy)
  • Dressings considerations


This 6-day advanced course is open to Certified Lymphedema Therapists (CLT's). All participants need to show proof of completion of a CDT certification program from one of the recognized schools.


The tuition for the Advanced Lymphedema Management (ALM) Certification course is $1300.00. A minimum deposit of $500.00 is required at the time of registration and will secure your spot in the course. The balance of the tuition is due thirty (30) days prior to the first day of class. Students who have already taken ACOLS Advanced Lymphedema Management 2 day course and/or ACOLS Lymphedema of the Head & Neck course (HLN) can receive partial credit for tuition and only complete the missing section(s) to receive ALM certification.

We offer an early registration discount of 10% if registered 60 days or more in advance. Financing options and payment plans are available if needed.


This course is 6-days in length (50 contact hours). The classroom hours are 8:00am – 6:30pm. There will be approximately one hour for lunch every day

Continuing Education Credits (CEU's)

This course is 50 Contact Hours. CEU's are available. Each state and profession is different, so please contact our Admissions Department for more detailed information regarding CEU approvals. Academy of Lymphatic Studies is an approved provider for the AOTA, NCBTMB and various state professional boards. Please call for details.
